There are many different types of lubricants on the market today.

1. Oil Based lubricants came on the market in the late 1970's at the height of the sexual revolution.   Prior to this most men were using Crisco as a means of lubrication for all types of sex and masturbation.

Oil Based:

• Not Latex Safe
• Use polyurethane condoms
• Many popular brands are a cream formula such as; Elbow Grease
• Will not dry up
• Do not need to reapply
• Great for long play time
• Use soap and water to remove
• May stain fabrics

2. Water Based lubricants became popular in the 1980's with the onset of HIV/AIDS.  Men were looking for a lubricant that would be latex safe for use with latex condoms.

Water Based:

• Latex Safe
• Will dry up
• Need to reapply
• Easily cleans up with water
• Does not stain fabrics

3. Silicone Based lubricants hit the market in the 1990's adding another option for latex users.  This new innovative, slick feel quickly became a favorite among many.  Look for quality formulas that contain only 2 or 3 ingredients.  Formulas with fewer ingredients should offer you a higher quality silicone lubricant.

Silicone Based:

• Latex Safe
• Does not dry up
• Do not need to reapply
• Use soap and water to remove
• May stain fabrics
• Very Slippery - use with caution
